Unique cycling archive is auctioned: “75 years of collecting has cost me an apartment“
From next week they have something special on offer in an auction house in Schilde: the cycling collection of Hugo De Meyer. From the age of 5, he collected everything related to the race. But he moved into an apartment, so the collection could not come along. The almost 80-year-old hopes to recuperate part of his expensive hobby through the auction.
Hugo De Meyer is looking for new owners for his impressive cycling collection. All in all, the collection cost an apartment, says Hugo himself.
“I don’t regret it. The collection has become my hobby. For me it was a way to turn the switch after a working day.”
Hugo grew up in a family where cycling was a daily routine. Inspired by his great hero Rik Van Steenbergen, he started collecting at the age of 5.
“When I was little, a neighbor came to visit every day. He gave me the Sportwereld newspaper as a present. I cut out all the cycling photos. I threw the text away. I was 5 years old … I couldn’t read yet of course. “Hugo joked.
